Stories are usually one of two things: Fictional accounts of something nonfictional. Or nonfictional sounding accounts of something imaginary. However, on occasion, there are those stories which blur the real world with fantasy; tales which started as something true and historic and have since morphed into the realm of the imaginary. Some stories are created to teach lessons or morals, using tropes and archetypes to help younger generations understand the past mistakes made throughout history so they may be the ones to help ensure they are never repeated. Other times, they’re told as a means to keep traditions and memories alive of those long since passed.
Yet some stories are unique in that they encompass all of the above; they transcend memory, fantasy, and reality and engross generations in pursuit of proving the truth behind the lore.
They inspire those who grew up hearing them, instill within them a sense of creativity, imagination, and openness that keeps them curious, determined, and persistent. These stories, through time, either grow or wane in popularity, the narrative morphing and twisting with the years until what is left usually does not remotely resemble the story which started it all. And so the fate of most tales, in the end, is to become an almost lie. So was the fate of the story behind the fabled Four Keys of Anakastah, which began, as almost all stories do, many, many years ago.
Yet the true tale of the keys begins here and now, centuries after the legend behind it came and went. The true story behind the Four Keys of Anakastah wasn’t what happened when they were created-It was what took place when an unlikely group of people joined together to seek them out, and in doing so brought reality and fantasy crashing together, eventually uncovering the unbelievable truth behind the firmly believed in legend. -
Set in the dystopian country of Omnia, The Greater Good focuses on how the actions of one man set in motion the destruction of thousands of lives and forever changed the course of one person’s future. Following a scandal involving Omnia’s Minister, a mass execution is ordered all female children born within a five year period. Desperate to save his own illegitimate heir, the Minister entrusts his best friend and State Physician, Salvatore Grimmley, to ensure her protection.
Twenty one years later, while she is still alive, her life has never been her own. Never being able to leave the house, be her true self, know her family, and never even having a name of her own, she is sworn to protect the one secret no one can ever know-
That she is a woman.
This secret becomes harder to conceal after she is caught during an irregular government raid while attempting to help another escape and brought to the State Prison of Mortem where she is given her first true identity-Three Twenty-Seven. Overcrowded and with no signs of slowing, the Ministry implements what they call Cleansings-series of challenges where prisoners are drawn from a Lottery and forced to compete through grueling challenges until only one remains. Whoever is left after the final Cleansing will be awarded their freedom.
During her time in Mortem, her true identity is revealed: she is the sole heir to Omnia and her name is Veritas.
As she competes through these challenges, Veritas discovers unlikely allies, creates formidable enemies, learns about the Radical and Rebel forces existing within and beyond the walls of Mortem, and uncovers her country’s twisted past and, in turn, her own. After discovering the truth about who she is and the actions which led to the present, she suddenly feels a responsibility to everyone around her to make it through to the end so she can earn her freedom and help those who truly deserve it find theirs as well.
As she continues fighting for her life, she is faced with the choice between love and freedom as her loyalties become tested; should she trust the person sworn to protect her or the person she swore to protect?
Will she be able to overcome these challenges, keep her secret, and rise above to secure her freedom? Or will she become yet another sacrifice made, as with all things in Omnia, for the Greater Good?Item description -
